What’s the origins story of the Detroit Lions?
Fresh from their wildcard playoff appearance last season, the Detroit Lions roar back into action at Ford Field for the 2015 National Football League regular season this month. But how did the boys in Honolulu blue ever start sporting a lion on their helmets. Have no fear; Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) offers some insight on the home team’s humble beginnings. It begins in 1929 when the Portsmouth Spartans played in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Great Depression placed financial pressure on the Spartans, finally leading to a sale of the team to Detroit radio executive George Richards. A move to the Motor City followed, along with a choice to rename the team in recognition of the presence of the Major League Baseball team, the Detroit Tigers. Spartans became Lions, and a new team started a quest for gridiron glory.
